We had the opportunity to see the new movie Courageous when it came out just recently, and one of the parts that stuck out and stuck with me was the part where the police officer takes his daughter to dinner and talks about winning her heart and protecting it and that when the right guy came along that she would trust him to know and acknowledge that and her final confirmation that this was right would be his approval.
Stephen and I have talked about that part of the movie off and on every since we watched it; we've discussed a girl's need for her daddy's affection, affirmations, encouragement, discipline, etc. and today even in its humor I saw the beginnings of this...her heart being won by her daddy and her giving it to him...
Conversation went like this...
(Side note: Stephen had just come home and jumped off my car because of a dead battery and we were in the car headed to lunch and Stephen was in the car in front of us...)
Madie: Mommy, there's your husband.
(She refers to him like that all the time! Quite humorous!)
Me: You're right, there he is. I love him, don't you?
Madie: Yes, I love OUR husband
Me: Madie, he's MY husband, he's YOUR daddy.
Madie: But I want him to be my husband too.
Me: Well baby, he can't be your husband because he's your daddy...he is MY husband.
Madie: Well maybe he can be my husband if I share my lunch with him...
Me: Oh me...
That little girl loves her daddy...I pray that she will continue to feel like this about her daddy, that he is the one she will trust her heart to (other than her Heavenly Father) until she gives her heart away to her husband. I pray that she will care deeply about her daddy's approval and expectations. I pray that we can instruct her, love her, and care for her the way her heart needs until the day we give her away to the man who will do all of those things for her.
I pray this for both of my girls...but above all else, I pray that they trust their Heavenly Father all the more and seek His approval even before desiring ours. Lord, help us lead them in the ways that they should go, so that they will not turn from you!

Brings tears to my eyes! I just told J the other day that I can't wait until Hattie is a daddy's girl (mostly because she was clining to my legs at the moment, LOL!) But honestly, I so remember being a daddy's girl as a child.... well honestly, until the day he died. You are so right.. Daddy's affection, affirmation and discipline are so vital to a them!! Thanks for sharing!
